PVS Jr. Champs



The first of four championship meet weekends kicked off March 4-7 with the PVS Jr. Championships. 23 swimmers competed for the Marlins in a total of 76 events. Thirty-nine personal bests were achieved resulting in 51% best times. Ten swimmers qualified in fourteen new events for the PVS Senior Champs meet. Leading the way for the Marlins was Eli Bass with a perfect five for five best times. Three of Eli’s swims resulted in big time drops. On Thursday, Eli swam the 1000 free and improved 25.51 seconds for a 2nd place overall finish in the event. On Saturday he also swam the 500 free breaking the 5:00 barrier for the first time (4:59.03) for a 9.35 sec. drop and a 7th place finish. But, Eli was not done yet, he also swam the 1650 freestyle on Sunday which resulted in a 26.68 second drop in time and a 3rd place overall finish. Eli’s swims in the 1000 free and 1650 free also qualified him for the PVS Sr. Champs meet in those events. Great meet Eli. All your hard work has really paid off!
Teammates, Ariane Emerson and Caleb Meindertsma also had very good meets. Both Ariane and Caleb were four for four personal bests. Ariane made finals in all four of her events, placing 11th in the 100 breast, 8th in the 200 breast, 3rd in the 200 back and 8th in the 200 IM. Ariane’s biggest time drop came in the 200 back where she dropped 3.49 seconds and qualified for PVS Sr. Champs. Caleb also made finals in all four of his events taking 6th place in the 100 fly (-3.35), 10th place in the 400 IM (-11.88), 11th place in the 200 back (-5.57) and 3rd place in the 200 IM (-1.57). Caleb’s best performance came in the 100 fly where he qualified for the PVS Sr. Champs meet. Great swimming Ariane and Caleb!
Four Marlin swimmers managed three personal bests at the meet. Maxine Clifford had two big time drops in the 200 back (-4.27) and the 200 IM (-4.32) and both swims resulted in Sr. Champ qualifying times. Marissa Coughlin put up personal bests in the 200 free, 500 free and 200 IM. Marissa dropped 3.77 seconds in the 500 free and qualified for finals in the 200 free (4th place), 200 breast (12th place) and the 500 free (16th place). Sierra Higinbotham returned for finals in four of her five events at the meet. Sierra placed 13th in the 200 free, 5th in the 100 free, 5th in the 200 IM and she tied teammate Gloriya Mavrovra for 1st place in the 50 free. Sierra and Gloryia both qualified for Sr. Champs in the 50 free and Sierra qualified in the 100 free. Carolyn Rice also put up three personal bests in the 50 free, 500 free and 100 free. Carolyn placed 4th overall in the 500 free and achieved Sr. Champ qualifying times in the 50 free and 100 free. Congratulations to all four swimmers, great meet!
There are a few other swimmers to mention who achieved something special at the meet. Nick Campbell qualified for Sr. Champs in the 100 free (50.60) and teammate Alexis Regan qualified for Sr. Champs in the 50 free (26.15). Dirk Verheul placed 14th in the 1000 free while Mary Dilworth improved her 200 breast 5.41 seconds (2:40.07). And the award for the largest time drop of the meet goes to Maddie Carinci in the 1650 free where she dropped a whopping 59.41 seconds and qualified for the Sr. Champs meet. Great job to all!
