The Potomac Marlins continued our comeback and rebuilding process at this year’s PVS JO’s which were held at the Fairland Aquatic Center on March 17-20 in Laurel Maryland. This is the third year in a row where the JO qualifying times have gotten significantly faster in many events across all the age groups. Despite that, the Marlins qualified 63 swimmers for the meet this year which is about 20 swimmers more than any of the previous 5 years. This year’s squad improved a lot compared to last year’s team. In 2009-10 the Marlins finished in 9th place with 312 points. This year we finished in 8th place with 606.5 points. This is almost double the points from the 2009-10 effort! Congrats to all of the JO swimmers and coaches on an outstanding meet. The team had 158 individual swims which resulted in 109 best times, (69% PB’s). There were also three swimmers who finished in the top 20 in points at the meet. Jonathan Pollock (10) was 7th over all while teammate Hyung Tae Chang (10) was 17th. Holly Jansen (11) placed 20th over all. Below are our team’s highlights from the meet.
Six swimmers were a perfect 6 for 6 best times. Scott Baxter continued his winning ways by dropping 4.13 seconds in the 200 IM, 6.17 seconds in the 200 free, and 4.94 seconds in the 100 back. In addition to these impressive time drops, Scott placed 8th in the 200 IM, 16th in the 100 IM, 10th in the 100 back and 16th in the 50 free. Great Meet Scott! Hyung Tae Chang had several big time drops as well. Tae dropped 3.02 seconds in the 100 free, 7.74 seconds in the 200 IM, 4.64 seconds in the 100 IM, a huge 9.82 seconds in the 200 free and 4.65 seconds in the 100 back. If that were not impressive enough, Tae placed in the top 16 in five out of his six events; 100 free (9th), 200 IM (6th), 100 IM (12th), 200 free (5th) and 100 back (15th). Sweet swimmin’ Tae!
Kate Croxton represented the Lady Marlins with a perfect 6 for 6 meet with one big time drop in the 200 fly (-5.39) and placing 14th in the 50 fly, 14th in the 50 free and 10th in the 100 fly. Keep it up Kate! Other lady marlins who went six for six were Allison Goldblatt and Grace Obando. Allison had two big drops, the first coming in the 200 IM (-5.39) and the second in the 200 fly (-3.60). Allison placed 7th in the 50 fly, 16th in the 200 fly and 13th in the 100 fly. Keep flying high Allison, great job! Grace Obando had four events where she dropped more than 3 seconds. Her first big drop was in the 200 back (-7.57) next came the 200 IM (-3.22) then the 200 free (-4.88) and finally the 100 back (-3.64) Great meet Grace!
Jonathan Pollock was the final Marlin swimmer to go 6 for 6. Jonathan had one of those rare meets that don’t come along too often. Although Jonathan did not have any swims where he dropped over three seconds, he did place in the top 5 in four events and was 8th in his 5th event. Jonathan placed 2nd in the 50 breast earning himself a spot on the PVS Zone Team in that event. He placed 8th in the 100 free, 4th in the 100 IM, 3rd in the 100 breast (and another Zone slot) and 2nd in the 50 free and his third Zone event. Jonathan and Hyung Tae teamed up with Warren Breiseth and Blake Marcey to break the 10&U boys 200 Medley Relay and then Jonathan, Tae and Blake teamed up with Max Kuranda to break the 10&U boys 200 free relay. The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades!!
The boys 11-12 400 Medley Relay team of Jonathan Wen, Ben Gryski, Scott Baxter and Colin Kent broke the Marlins Team Record (from 2008) setting the new mark at 4:34.89. And if that was not enough the 11-12 boy also broke the 400 freestyle team record (from 1998)! The relay team of Scott Baxter, Colin Kent, Ben Gryski and Curtis Aramburu set the new mark at 4:00.45. Nice swimming guys! Now you can go after the 13-14 records!
Three swimmers were close to perfection. The first was Evan Baker who went five for six best times. Evan had four events with big time drops. Evan dropped 16.46 seconds in the 1000 free, he dropped 10.99 seconds in the 500 free, 3.35 in the 200 fly and a whopping 57.29 seconds in the 1650 free. Evan also placed 15th in the 200 fly and 15th in the 1650. Way to go Evan! Holly Jansen dropped big time in three of her five personal best swim at the meet. Holly dropped 5.53 seconds in the 200 IM for a 4th place finish. She dropped 3.82 seconds in the 100 IM for a 5th place finish and she dropped 6.15 seconds in the 200 breast for a 4th place finish. In addition to these swims Holly also placed 9th in the 100 breast. Great Meet Holly, keep up the good work! Finally, Blake Marcey went five out of six personal bests. Blake’s biggest time drop occurred in the 100 fly where he improved 6.42 seconds.
Several swimmers swam four personal bests at the meet. Warren Breiseth had four PB’s with big time drops in the 500 free (-27.94) and the 200 free (-5.56). Ben Gryski had a 13th place finish in the 200 breast which was also his biggest time drop of the meet at 7.45 seconds. Corinne Kominski had four personal best even though none resulted in a time drop of over 3 seconds she still a great meet!! John Macdonald went four out of six PB’s with a nice drop of 13.75 seconds in the 1000 free, another nice drop of 4.83 seconds in the 500 free and a huge drop of 37.63 seconds (and a 13th place finish) in the 1650 free. And lastly, Natalie Obando was a perfect four for four PB’s with a 5th place finish in the 100 back and a 4th place finish in the 200 back.
