2010 Sport Fair Winter Classic

Holly JansenHoliday Magic

If you had to pick one word to describe our team performance at this year’s Sport Fair Winter Classic meet, what would it be? Amazing?  Stupendous? Awesome? Excellent?  I think I would just have to simply say, “WOW!”  The 86 member squad catapulted the team from a sixth place finish at last year’s meet to a second place finish at this year’s meet.  Twenty-three meet records were broken at this year’s meet, four of them by 10 year old Holly Jansen, (Lee Dist).

Holly set new meet records in the 10&U 100 breast, 100 IM, 200 IM and 50 Breast. In addition to her meet record setting performances, Holly also was the 10&U High Point Award winner with 113 points. And, if that wasn’t good enough, Holly also broke five team records as well.  Her new team records came in the 50 breast, 100 breast, 50 fly, 100 IM and 200 IM.  WOW!  What a meet!  Congrats to Holly on an amazing meet.

Senior swimmer, Laura Schwartz captured the Runner-up High point award in the 15-18 Girls age group. Laura swam her way to two first places ( 500 Free and 400 I.M.) and 4 second places ( 200 Free, 50 Free, 200 I.M. and 100 Free). Way to go Laura!

Three other team records were broken at the meet.  Jonathan Pollock set a new mark in the 9-10 boys 100 IM then teamed up with five of his teammates to set new team records in the 9-10 100 free and 100 medley relays. Congrats to the new team record holders in the 100 free relay, Hyung Tae Chang, Max Kuranda, Ben Barbee and Jonathan Pollock. Congrats also go to the new 100 medley relay team record holders, Kellen Campbell, Garrett Downs, Hyung Tae Chang, and Jonathan Pollock.  Great job all of you!

Caleb MeindertsmaThe rest of the team’s performance was equally as impressive.  So impressive that I cannot list everyone who dropped at least 3.0 seconds in an event!  I can’t even list everyone who dropped 4.0 seconds in an event.  There were simply just too many swimmers who swam well to mention everyone.  I wish I could.  So, I set the bar at 5.0 seconds.  Even at this impressive time drop number, we still had 46 swimmers who had at least one swim with more than 5.0 seconds time drop!  That’s 53% of the squad!  WOW!  Out of those 46 kids there were 73 swims with time drops of 5.0 sec or more, (9% of all swims).  WOW!  As a team, the kids were at a very impressive 74% over all best times, 588 out of 798 total swims were best times, (number does not include first time swims). This is a very good percentage for a December meet.

Marcus QuintEleven Marlin swimmers were a perfect 100% best times with eighteen more nearly perfect, missing only one event.  What makes this so impressive is some of these kids swam 12-16 events between prelims, finals and relays!  That means many of these kids were swimming a best time every single time they hit the water!  WOW!  The following swimmers were perfect for the meet: Ben Barbee (age 10) 8/8, Anthony Barbee (age 16) 7/7, Stephanie Clarke (age 16) 13/13, Brynn Feighery (age 11) 7/7, Kevin Grant (age 15) 7/7, Lauren Hensley (age 14) 14/14 (WOW), Martin Javelosa (age 13) 12/12 (WOW), Gabriella Kuehhas (age 11) 7/7, Haley McLean (age 14) 11/11 (WOW),  Jake Weeren (age 13) 7/7.

And that’s not all!  60 of our swimmers scored points for the team by finishing in the top 16 places.  50 swimmers qualified for finals, (58%) and 32 of those 50 kids qualified for finals in the top 8 positions, (37%).  Another big WOW!  See the chart below for those that qualified for finals and their overall place.  Great job on the first half of the season everyone! Let’s stay focused on the second half of our season and see if we can out do ourselves in March!  Thanks again to all of our Coaches, Parents, and Officials for another great meet. We can’t do it without all of you!

As you can see from the above stats, one word really can’t describe what a great meet we all had.  Suffice it to say that the kids really “WOW’ed” us!   What a great way to kick off the Holiday Magic.

Coach Bill
