2010 Sport Fair Winter Classic
Team Selection Process

Our December culminating meet is the Sport Fair Winter Classic, which is a “team selection” meet. We are limited to entering a total 80 swimmers in the meet. It is open to members of the Marlins who are “selected” by the coaching staff to participate. For this year’s meet, the staff has decided on the following selection criteria:

1. The cut-off date for consideration of times will be the conclusion of the 2010 Penn State Meet.  All times for selection consideration will be from Jan. 1, 2010 through the PSU Travel Meet.

2. Swimmers having achieved a time equal to the 2010 Tom Dolan Invitational standard (3 events minimum) will be selected for the team. (Qualifying times must be in your age group as of Dec. 3, 2010)

3. Swimmers having current PVS Junior Olympic qualifying times (3 events minimum) will be selected for the team  (Qualifying times must be in the your age group as of Dec. 3, 2010)

4. Using the Hy-Tek points system, all swimmers will have a point value assigned to every individual event in which they have a 2010 US Swimming time. Using the Hy-Tek scoring system, the coaches will pick 80 swimmers for the meet. This means that we will choose somewhere between 6 - 10 swimmers in each group for each gender. A list of all current swimmers and the Hy-Tek scores will be posted by October 1, 2010.

5. For each age group, we will also consider the needs of the team for relays, etc. We will also be looking at the developmental needs of our younger swimmers. (Are they “ready” for this type of meet?).

6. Other factors considered in the selection process will be your swimmer’s practice attendance, meet participation and the recent health of swimmer. Swimmers who are injured, recovering from illness or who have had discipline problems within the team structure may be excluded from the meet.

Please keep in mind that in all youth sports, it is always difficult to have the “perfect” system in a “selection” process. The staff feels confident that the selection process to be used for the 2010 Sport Fair Winter Classic squad will be fair and equitable. Swimmer’s times posted at the US Swimming web site have a hy-tek score assigned to them.  Please remember that the points at the US site reflect single age scoring ( 9 yr. old, 10 year old). We are using a point system based on age groups as swum in the meet (9 -10, 11-12).  There will be a different score at the US web site as compared to the marlin web site because of this.
