2011-12 ANNUAL AWARD DEFINITIONS
The following awards are presented at the annual Awards Ceremony in May of each season.
TOP GUN Award: Awarded to the Top 3 swimmers (Male and Female) for the highest cumulative USA Swimming Time Standard rankings in each of the following event categories;

- 9-12 yr. old swimmers will be ranked based upon their 50yd. & 100yd. points for BK, BR and FL, and their 100yd. & 200yd. points for I.M.
- 13 -18 yr. old swimmers will be ranked based upon their 100yd. & 200yd. points for BK, BR, and FL, and their 200yd. & 400yd. points for I.M.
In the event of a tie the swimmer with the highest cumulative IMX national ranking for the stroke/age group in question will receive the higher level award. Swimmers will receive one award listing all events in the case of multiple event top honors. USA time standard points are based upon the following Marlins team formula:

USA SWIMMING IMX Award: (plaque / trophy & certificate) Awarded to the top 20 male and top 20 female swimmers in each AGE GROUP (15 & Over, 13-14, 11-12, 10 & Under) who achieve the highest total IMX points based upon the USA Swimming IMX point scoring system. Top 10 swimmers in each category will receive plaque/trophy & certificate. 11-20 will receive certificate). A minimum of 500 IMX points is required to be eligible for this award. Swimmers with 3000 points or more will receive special recognition in the "3000 CLUB" posted on the web site.
NATIONAL/SECTIONAL/ZONE TEAM Award Commemorative plaques for swimmers who QUALIFY and PARTICIPATE in the meet representing the Potomac Marlins. A certificate acknowledging the swimmer’s qualifying for the meet will be presented in recognition should the swimmer chose not to participate in the meet. Bonus events swum at the meet will not be noted on the awards.
USA SWIMMNG TOP 10 AWARD: Presented to all swimmers who reach the USA Top 10 consideration time standard as established by USA Swimming. Actual top 10 swimmers names are subsequently published by USA Swimming (Swimming World). Certificates are then presented to “actual” Top 10 swimmers by Potomac Valley Swimming at a later date when results are finalized by USA Swimming.
RECORD BREAKER Award/Certificate
- National/American Records: Awarded to swimmers who break any Nationally recognized Records.
- Potomac Valley Record Breaker: Awarded to swimmers who set new Potomac Valley Swimming Records in Short Course or Long Course during either of the
previous seasons.
- Team Record Breaker: Certificate presented to the swimmers who have broken team records during the previous Long Course and/or Short Course seasons and have retained the records as of the last meet of each respective season.
PERCENT DESCENT Award: Awarded to the single swimmer (male and female, non-age based) who has achieved the highest percentage time drop in each of the 22 events during the course of the current sort course season. Swimmers will receive one award listing all events in the case of multiple event top honors. Swimmers must swim a particular event a minimum of two times during the current season for the event to be considered towards total time drop. A swimmer’s base time is established from the swimmer’s first meet of the current short course season in which a particular event was swum as a Potomac Marlin OR their previous life time best time (whichever is fastest) through the last meet of the spring Championship season. (Events, which are only swum once during the current short course season, will not be considered). The intention of this award is to recognize improvement over the course of the current short course season (September – March), NOT from one season or year to the next. Percent Descent Event List:

Graduating Senior Award: To all Graduating Seniors who have been with team for at least 1 full season. Reading or presentation of Senior farewell statements is anticipated at the awards ceremony.
NOTE: Awards not received during the annual awards ceremony will be distributed at practice facilities during the week following the ceremony.
The following awards are presented at PRACTICES in May by the deck coaches (not at the awards ceremony)
MARLINS IMREADY Award: (certificate) Awarded to the top 20 male and top 20 female swimmers in the following age groups (13-14, 11-12, 10 & Under) who have achieved the highest IMReady points based upon the USA Swimming IMReady point scoring system.
NEW MEMBER MEDAL: Awarded to all NEW member swimmers in their initial season. New Team Member Medals will be presented during the month of May at practice (not at the awards ceremony)
MINI MARLINS PARTICIPATION MEDAL: Presented to all registered Mini-Marlins and 8 & under Junior Marlins who participated in at least 2 PVS sanctioned MINI MEET during the season. Mini Marlins Participation Medals will be presented during the month of May at practice (not at the awards ceremony)
COACH’S AWARD: Swimmers are chosen by the subjective opinions of the coaching staff. Coaches may choose up to 5 swimmers per practice group or maximum of 8 for coaches who coach two or more distinct groups. The COACH'S Awards are given at the discretion of each individual coach and will be presented at practices during the month of May (not at the awards ceremony). Coaches decisions may be based upon, but not limited to the following areas of swimmer development and accomplishment:
- Attitude: Swimmer exhibits a high degree of personal excellence in one or more of the following
areas: sportsmanship, self-discipline, attitude, team spirit, leadership and respect.
- Consistency: Swimmer exhibits consistency in hard working practice habits and attendance.
- Improvement: swimmer has demonstrated substantial improvement (speed, stroke technique, effort level, etc..) in practice during the course of the current short course season.
TEAM PARTICIAPTION CERTIFICATE: Awarded to ALL registered swimmers. These certificates will NOT be presented at the awards ceremony. Participation Certificates will be mailed or delivered to each swimmer at the end of the season (not at the awards ceremony).
